Korravar's Ruin
Korravar was a warlord of legendary size who, according to the sagas, drove his axe into the heart of a slumbering volcano to prove his dominion over the mountain itself. The volcano did not yield, but the axe emerged from its depths three days later, dragged up through the rock by something that still smolders within it. Those who have wielded it claim they can feel the mountain's anger in every swing.
Mechanics
A volcanic greataxe that erupts with fire on devastating hits and can be hurled like a meteor to reshape the battlefield.
Molten Edge
This greataxe has a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls. On a hit, it deals an additional 1d6 fire damage. The blade constantly radiates warmth; the wielder is immune to the effects of extreme cold weather (as described in the DMG environmental hazards rules) and automatically melts any ice they touch with this weapon.
Eruption Strike
When you score a critical hit with this weapon, the blade detonates in a burst of volcanic force. Each creature within 10 feet of the target (other than you) must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d8 fire damage and be knocked prone. On a successful save, a creature takes half damage and is not knocked prone. The blast does not harm you.
Meteor Hurl
Once per day, you can throw this weapon at a point you can see within 60 feet as an action. The axe screams through the air trailing fire and strikes the ground at the target point. Each creature within 15 feet of that point must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 4d8 fire damage on a failure or half as much on a success. The ground in the area becomes difficult terrain until the start of your next turn as superheated rock and embers scatter across it. Korravar's Ruin then falls to the ground in the center of the area and can be retrieved normally. This property recharges at dawn.
DM Notes
This item sits at the upper end of the Rare tier. The +1 bonus combined with 1d6 fire damage on every hit is a consistent and meaningful damage boost, so consider reserving it for a player who has demonstrated reliability and table engagement with powerful items. The Eruption Strike property is the real combat spike, a critical hit triggering a 2d8 AoE knockdown can cascade dramatically in tight melee. In encounters featuring multiple clustered enemies, this can feel extremely powerful; consider placing it with a player who enjoys tactical positioning rather than one who might not factor it in. Meteor Hurl's 4d8 AoE once per day is roughly equivalent to a Fireball in a smaller radius, making it a strong nova option but not oppressive given the once-per-day limit. The difficult terrain rider adds meaningful tactical texture. The cold weather immunity is almost purely flavorful and should never be a balance concern. Suggested introduction: a volcanic dungeon, an ancient tomb of a fire-worshipping culture, or the hoard of a fire giant who claimed it after slaying Korravar's descendant.
