UncommonWondrous Item (brooch)

Sireth Vaul

Level 5·Bard

Sireth Vaul, roughly 'the chill that names the lie' in an old coastal tongue, was crafted by a diplomat who grew tired of being deceived at courts where words were weapons and silence was currency. The brooch was passed quietly between spies and negotiators for generations, each previous owner etching a tiny mark on its back, a private tally of truths extracted. The current count stands at two hundred and eleven.

Appearance

A small oval brooch of pale silver, its surface carrying a blue-grey patina like ice before it cracks.

Mechanics

A frost-touched brooch that reads the emotional temperature of those nearby, granting insight into deception and unspoken intent.

Cold Reading

While wearing this brooch, you perceive subtle involuntary cues, a quickened breath, a stiffening jaw, the faint flush of guilt, as clearly as spoken words. You have advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks made to determine whether a creature is lying or concealing strong emotion. When you succeed on such a check, the brooch grows noticeably cold against your skin, a private signal visible only to you.

Frost of Silence

When a creature within 10 feet of you that you can see succeeds on a Charisma (Deception) check against you or an ally, a thin rime of frost forms across the creature's lips and jaw, lasting until the start of your next turn. While frosted, the creature has disadvantage on its next Charisma (Deception) or Charisma (Persuasion) check. The creature is unaware of the frost unless it looks in a mirror or is told.

DM Notes

Balance: The Insight advantage is a strong social-pillar benefit but limited to a narrow circumstance, detecting lies and concealed emotion only, not general Insight checks. The Frost of Silence is triggered and imposes disadvantage on a subsequent check, but requires the creature to have first succeeded against the player, making it a reactive consolation rather than a proactive advantage. Together they create a meaningful social identity without enabling the wearer to dominate every interaction. Consider having NPCs notice the frost if they are particularly observant or paranoid, which can create interesting complications, a court mage might recognize the enchantment, or a target might become suspicious of a sudden chill. No attunement is intentional; the benefit is social rather than combat-impacting.
