Emberclaw Memorial Totem

Level 3·Barbarian

Deep in the hills outside a forgotten village lies a pet cemetery older than anyone can remember, where the beloved companions of generations were laid to rest with small carved posts bearing their names. This totem was whittled from one such post — taken without permission — and the fire motifs burned into its surface were meant to honor those animals' undying loyalty. But one grave was left open and one spirit refused to cross: a cat named Mister Cinders, who burned in a house fire and was buried still smoldering, and who has never forgiven anyone for anything.

Mechanics

A scorched grave-totem carved from a pet cemetery post that lets you call burning spectral animal spirits to mark enemies, but is haunted by a vengeful dead cat that claws at your resolve.

Pyre Spirits

Once per day, as a bonus action, you slam the totem against a surface or hold it aloft. Ghostly, fire-wreathed animal silhouettes — dogs, birds, rabbits — swirl around one creature you can see within 30 feet for 1 minute. While a creature is marked by the Pyre Spirits, the first time each turn that it deals damage to a creature other than you, it takes 1d6 fire damage as the spirits lash at it in retribution. The effect ends early if you are incapacitated or move more than 60 feet from the marked creature.

Warm Remembrance

While holding or wearing the totem, you have advantage on death saving throws. The warmth of countless remembered companions steadies the holder at the threshold of death.

Curse

The totem is haunted by the spirit of Mister Cinders, a half-burned cat buried at the cemetery whose grave was disturbed when the totem was made. The curse is discovered the first night you sleep with the totem on your person: you awake with four shallow claw marks across your forearm and a lingering sense of being watched. The curse's ongoing effect is subtle but persistent — whenever you roll a natural 1 on any attack roll or ability check, Mister Cinders rakes at your concentration and composure. You must immediately succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of the nearest creature until the end of your next turn, as the cat's hateful yowling fills your mind. The curse cannot be removed by identify, and only a remove curse spell or a proper burial rite performed over the original grave with the totem present (at the DM's discretion) can put Mister Cinders to rest.

DM Notes

Balance consideration: Pyre Spirits is a once-per-day bonus action that deals 1d6 fire damage reactively, which is modest and conditional at levels 2–4. It rewards positioning and tactical play without being overpowered. Warm Remembrance (advantage on death saving throws) is a meaningful but niche passive that won't dominate play at low levels. The curse triggers only on natural 1s, which is rare, but the frightened condition can be genuinely punishing in tight situations — consider warning the player before they attune if you want to preserve dramatic discovery, or let them find it in play for maximum impact. The burial-quest hook is intentional: this item is designed to motivate a short side quest at levels 3–5 to finally lay Mister Cinders to rest, at which point the DM may choose to let the curse lift and perhaps grant the totem a minor upgrade as a reward for doing right by a dead cat.
