Iridescent Lodestone of Veranthos
Veranthos was a wandering archmage-errant who believed that magic, like light through a prism, was never truly a single force but a convergence of infinite possibilities waiting to be separated and directed. She fashioned this lodestone from the crystallized heart of a collapsing ley-line intersection, embedding within it a fractal resonance that responds to a caster's intent. Those who carry it claim the stone hums at a different pitch for each school of magic, as if the imprisoned ley-line energy is still trying to find its way home.
Mechanics
A prismatic arcane focus that amplifies spellcasting through a shifting resonance pool, letting its wielder sculpt spells more powerfully or protect themselves with a refracted ward.
Resonance Pool — 5 charges, recharges 1d4+1 at dawn
The Lodestone holds 5 charges. When you cast a spell using this focus, you may expend charges as part of the same action to trigger one of the following resonance effects. Only one resonance effect may be applied per spell cast.
Amplified Surge
When you cast a spell that deals damage, you may expend 1 charge to cause one damage die of the spell to deal maximum damage instead of rolling. The die must be one that you would normally roll as part of the spell's damage — it cannot apply to bonus dice from other sources such as critical hits.
Refracted Ward
As a reaction when you are targeted by a spell or magical effect that requires a saving throw, you may expend 2 charges to gain advantage on that saving throw. If you succeed the save, a faint prismatic shell flares around you until the start of your next turn, granting you +2 AC against the next attack made against you before the shell fades.
Fractal Reach
When you cast a spell with a range of 5 feet or greater (but not touch or self), you may expend 2 charges to increase the spell's range by 60 feet for that casting. Spells with an area of effect centered on yourself are not eligible for this effect.
Harmonic Echo
Once per dawn, when you cast a cantrip using this focus, you may expend 1 charge to cause that cantrip to deal an additional 1d8 damage of the same type. This additional die does not benefit from Amplified Surge.
5 charges
Recharges 1d4+1 at dawn
DM Notes
This item is well-suited for spellcasting characters at levels 5–7 who are beginning to encounter more dangerous casters and need flexibility in their toolkit. Amplified Surge is the bread-and-butter option at 1 charge and is the most commonly used effect — monitor that it doesn't trivialize damage spikes; maximizing a single die on a fireball is meaningful but not game-breaking. Refracted Ward is the most situationally powerful: the AC rider after a successful save is a nice bonus but requires a specific sequence of events, keeping it balanced. Fractal Reach is primarily a utility option that rewards creative positioning — it's most impactful when players find clever uses outside combat. Harmonic Echo is intentionally modest, giving cantrip-reliant casters a small but satisfying bonus action payoff. The 5-charge pool with variable recharge (1d4+1, average 3.5) means the item provides meaningful daily power without feeling inexhaustible. As DM, track whether the party is resting frequently enough to make recharge trivial — if so, consider introducing time pressure scenarios.
