Tideveil

Level 5·Bard

Fishermen along the Irefrost Coast sometimes find these small brooches tangled in their nets, flat discs of dull pewter set with a chip of pale blue sea-glass, perpetually cool to the touch regardless of weather. Sailors say they are shed skins of the deep, lost by things that chose to walk among the living. Those who wear them find the sea stops pulling at their face.

Mechanics

A salt-crusted brooch that masks the supernatural and makes the wearer harder to read.

Still Waters

While wearing this brooch, any visual or physical sign of your supernatural heritage, race, or ancestry, such as unusual skin color, faint luminescence, vestigial fins, or similarly distinctive features, appears mundane and unremarkable to casual observation. Creatures must succeed on a DC 14 Insight check to notice anything unusual about your appearance. This does not disguise your clothing, voice, or behavior, and does not fool magical detection such as detect magic or true seeing.

Cold Current

When a creature attempts to read your surface thoughts or emotions through non-magical means, such as a Wisdom (Insight) check made to discern whether you are lying or to gauge your emotional state, the brooch's chill bleeds into your bearing, lending you an impenetrable calm. You may add your Charisma modifier (minimum +1) to any Charisma (Deception) check made to conceal your true feelings or intentions in direct conversation.

DM Notes

Balance note: Still Waters has a fixed DC 14 Insight check, which is meaningful but beatable by perceptive NPCs, a well-rolled guard or a suspicious harbormaster can still clock the character, preserving dramatic tension without making him feel fully exposed every scene. Cold Current is a passive Charisma-modifier bonus to Deception, which is strong for a Bard (typically high Charisma) but limited strictly to concealing feelings in conversation, it does not apply to fabricating stories or passing forgeries. Together these two effects serve a character who wants to pass as human in port towns without making that trivially automatic. Neither effect does anything in combat, keeping the item's power budget firmly in the social and exploration pillars appropriate for uncommon without attunement.
