Woven from strands of spun quartz and consecrated gut, the Bright Suture was first carried by a battlefield surgeon who believed healing the wound was only half the work. The true art, she argued, was closing the gap before the next blow could open it again. Healers who have used it since describe the sensation of stitching air itself around a patient, sealing fate as firmly as flesh.

When you restore hit points to a creature, the target gains a lingering ward that absorbs the next instance of damage dealt to them.
Warding Stitch
Whenever you restore hit points to a creature other than yourself using a spell, ability, or item, that creature gains a Warding Stitch. The stitch absorbs the next instance of damage dealt to the creature, preventing up to 2d8 + 4 points of that damage. The stitch lasts until it absorbs damage or until the creature finishes a short or long rest. A creature can only benefit from one Warding Stitch at a time; applying a new one replaces the old.
DM Notes
Balance consideration: the 2d8+4 absorption averages roughly 13 points, which is meaningful but not dominant at rare tier. The ward only functions when healing is directed at another creature, so self-sustaining builds gain no benefit. The ward does not stack with itself, preventing snowball scenarios from repeated low-cost healing actions. DMs should note that cantrip-level healing or class features like Lay on Hands also trigger the ward, which is intentional and makes the item feel rewarding for dedicated support characters. Against enemies who deal multiple instances of damage per turn (multiattack), only the first hit triggers the absorption, which keeps it from trivializing sustained damage. Consider giving it to a healer early in a campaign arc where the party is overmatched defensively.
