Velundrix
Velundrix was not forged, it accreted. Over three centuries, a succession of artificers and salvagers added pieces to a central fragment of unknown origin: a shard of a shattered golem cortex, the face-plate of a deactivated automaton, gear-teeth from a clock that kept time for a city now underwater. Each contributor inscribed their discoveries on the inner face in languages that overlap and contradict one another. The half-elf who now carries it says it hums differently in each room, as though it is still comparing notes.
Mechanics
A shield built from fragments of seven forgotten devices that reveals deeper power the more its wielder studies and interacts with it, accumulating Insight and unlocking catastrophic defensive and offensive potential.
Velundrix Insight
Velundrix has a pool of Insight. The maximum Insight the shield can hold is 7. Insight is gained through the following triggers, each trigger can add Insight only once per long rest: examining a magic item you have not previously identified (1 Insight); succeeding on an Arcana or History check of DC 15 or higher (1 Insight); being reduced to half your hit point maximum or below in combat (1 Insight); touching a creature or object that bears an active enchantment, curse, or magical effect you did not create (1 Insight). Insight is never lost on a short rest. All accumulated Insight resets to 0 at the end of a long rest. While you hold Velundrix, you are proficient with it regardless of your class.
Tessellated Ward
While holding Velundrix, you gain a bonus to your Armor Class equal to the number of Insight currently stored in the shield, in addition to the shield's normal +2 AC bonus. At 7 Insight, this bonus is +7 and the shield's surface locks into a rigid geometric lattice visible to all creatures within 30 feet.
Dissective Parry
When you are hit by an attack while holding Velundrix, you can use your reaction to expend any number of Insight (minimum 1). For each Insight expended, reduce the damage of that attack by 1d8. If the damage is reduced to 0, you may immediately identify one property of the attacker chosen by the DM, such as a damage immunity, a condition immunity, a trait, or a special ability, as the shield's fragments analyze the force of the blow.
Recursive Discharge
Once per dawn, you can use your action to expend all remaining Insight currently stored in the shield and release it as a beam of concentrated analytical force. Choose a point you can see within 60 feet. Each creature within a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a DC 18 Intelligence saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 2d6 force damage for each Insight expended this way and is stunned until the end of its next turn. On a success, a creature takes half as much damage and is not stunned. This ability cannot be used if the shield holds 0 Insight.
Palimpsest Memory
Velundrix records every creature that has struck its bearer and every magic item property identified while attuned to it. You can spend 1 minute examining the shield's surface to review this catalogue. When you make an Arcana or History check to recall information about a creature type or magical effect recorded in the shield's memory, you have advantage on that check. Entries accumulate across attunement periods and are not cleared by the Insight reset.
DM Notes
Balance: Tessellated Ward's AC bonus scales up to +7 at maximum Insight, which combined with the base +2 gives a total of +9 AC from this shield, this is intentionally extreme at legendary rarity and represents the reward for consistent curious play across a session. In practice, most sessions will see the wielder sitting at 2-5 Insight, meaning the realistic mid-session bonus is +4 to +7 AC total from the shield, which is powerful but not game-breaking for legendary. The DM should seed sessions with at least one or two opportunities to gain Insight naturally. Recursive Discharge at 7 Insight deals up to 14d6 force damage in a 20-foot sphere with a stun rider, this is comparable to a 7th-level Synaptic Static and requires a full session of active curiosity to reach. The Dissective Parry is the most impactful moment-to-moment ability: at 7 Insight it can absorb up to 7d8 damage from a single hit, which will occasionally negate a devastating blow. Allow the DM-revealed trait from a zero-damage parry to be genuinely useful, not a trivia fact, but an actionable piece of information the player can act on. Palimpsest Memory is a long-term investment reward that compounds over the campaign. Consider dropping the shield in a location where the prior attuned owner's records are already inscribed, giving the new bearer a partial catalogue as a mystery hook.
