The Warden's Codex
When the great library of Aelthorven was consumed by shadowfire, its head archivist refused to abandon her wards. Her spirit and those of three apprentices seeped into the last surviving volume — a heavy tome bound in pale ashwood and sealed with a clasp shaped like an open eye. The book rearranges its own pages nightly, and readers sometimes catch margin notes appearing in handwriting that was not there before.
Mechanics
A haunted tome that binds spectral librarians to its pages, allowing the attuned to consult them for knowledge, shielding, and terrifying retribution against those who threaten its keeper.
Spectral Index
While attuned, you can open the Codex and speak a topic aloud as an action. The bound spirits within the tome provide you with information as if you had cast the Identify spell on a creature, object, or location within 30 feet of you — no spell slot required. This consults the Codex's 5 charges.
Pages of Warding
When you are hit by an attack, you can use your reaction and expend 1 charge to cause spectral pages to swirl around you. You gain a +2 bonus to your AC against that triggering attack (applied retroactively, potentially turning the hit into a miss). If the attack still hits, you take 5 (1d10) less damage from it.
Screaming Chapter
As an action, expend 2 charges to slam the Codex open and unleash a chorus of spectral wails in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 3d8 psychic damage and is frightened of you until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, the creature takes half damage and is not frightened.
Catalogued Memory
Once per dawn, without expending charges, you may touch the Codex and concentrate for 1 minute to consult its spectral archivists. At the end of the minute, the DM provides one truthful piece of hidden information about a mystery, location, or creature you have encountered within the last 24 hours — the kind of detail that would be known to a scholar who had spent years researching the subject. This ability functions as a narrative tool and its scope is at the DM's discretion.
5 charges
Recharges 1d4+1 charges at dawn
DM Notes
Balance note: Pages of Warding is the most potent ability — a retroactive +2 AC that can negate hits and reduce damage makes this meaningfully impactful at tier 2. Monitor closely if paired with a low-AC character who uses it every round; at 5 charges recharging 1d4+1 per dawn, sustained abuse is limited but possible. Screaming Chapter is strong at low-to-mid tier 2 but falls off naturally as enemy hit points and saves scale up. Catalogued Memory is intentionally narrative and should be treated as a structured DM-facing tool for delivering clues — it works best in investigation or dungeon-delve scenarios. Recommended to introduce this item in a library, archive, or ruin with strong scholarly flavor to let the lore breathe. The item does not require concentration on any of its effects, which is an intentional benefit reflecting the spirits acting as independent agents.
