The Tidewarden's Silence

Level 4·Bard

Woven from the shed skin of a sea-serpent that never surfaced twice in the same port, this cloak carries the chill of water a hundred fathoms deep. Sailors who have glimpsed it say it moves like seafoam, there one moment, gone the next. Those who wear it find that certain conversations simply never reach them, as though the ocean itself decided their secrets were worth keeping.

Mechanics

A frost-edged cloak that muffles the wearer's presence like a cold fog rolling off still water, and keeps secrets buried as deep as the ocean floor.

Fog of Still Water

While wearing this cloak, your footsteps and movement make no sound, and creatures have disadvantage on Perception checks that rely on hearing to detect you. This effect is always active and requires no action.

Cold Undercurrent

Whenever you are submerged in or touching a body of natural water (sea, river, lake, or harbor), you can breathe water as easily as air, and you are immune to the effects of cold water temperature. This property is always active.

Sealed Depths

Once per dawn, when a creature attempts to magically compel you to speak, reveal information, or read your surface thoughts (such as through the spells Detect Thoughts, Zone of Truth, or Suggestion), you may choose to have that attempt fail automatically against you. You are aware the attempt was made, though the caster is not made aware it failed.

DM Notes

Balance note: The 'Fog of Still Water' effect is the strongest ability at this tier, disadvantage on hearing-based Perception is a meaningful stealth buff, but it is limited to a single sense, which keeps it appropriately narrow for Uncommon. 'Sealed Depths' triggers only once per dawn and only against magical compulsion effects, making it situationally powerful but rarely dominant in typical sessions; in intrigue-heavy campaigns, the DM may wish to track how often it comes up, as it can be very impactful for characters built around keeping secrets. 'Cold Undercurrent' is primarily a narrative and exploration boon suited to a seafaring campaign, and contributes little to combat. The combination of the three effects is well-suited to an Uncommon item because each operates in a different domain: stealth, exploration, and social/magical resistance. Recommended for ocean-heavy campaigns or urban port settings where all three properties will see meaningful play.
