The Unwritten Veil

Level 12·Sorcerer

Forged in a city where identity was currency, this brooch was commissioned by a spymistress who understood that the most dangerous secret is the one you carry on your skin. It passed through seven hands before disappearing from recorded history, each owner noted in the ledgers only by description, never by name. Those who have worn it long enough describe a peculiar sensation: the feeling that even they have begun to forget which face is truly their own.

Mechanics

A brooch that sustains a permanent, layered illusion of its wearer's choosing while concealing their true thoughts and magical signature from all divination.

The Worn Face

While attuned to this brooch, you project a continuous illusory appearance over your entire body, including clothing, voice, and scent, as though permanently under the effects of the Disguise Self spell, with no concentration required and no duration limit. Unlike Disguise Self, this illusion is entirely convincing to touch as well as sight, and creatures that physically interact with you do not automatically discern it as an illusion. A creature that succeeds on an Intelligence (Investigation) check against a DC of 18 may perceive that something about your appearance is magically maintained, but cannot determine your true appearance by this check alone. You may change the illusory appearance as a bonus action.

Sealed Interior

Your true appearance, alignment, creature type, and mental state are hidden from all divination magic of 5th level or lower. Spells such as Detect Thoughts, True Seeing, or Detect Evil and Good reveal nothing beyond the illusion you project unless the caster succeeds on a DC 19 spellcasting ability check. Spells of 6th level or higher that target you and are used to divine your nature or read your thoughts automatically trigger a false impression of your choosing, a fabricated emotional state, surface thought, or alignment, rather than your true one. You decide the content of this false impression at the time the divination is made.

Unraveled Certainty

Once per dawn, when a creature within 30 feet of you succeeds on a saving throw against a spell you cast that has the enchantment or illusion school, you may use your reaction to force that creature to reroll the saving throw, taking the lower result. This ability represents the brooch feeding subtle psychic interference into the moment of resistance, eroding conviction at its root.

Mirror of Suspicion

Once per dawn, you can cast the spell Modify Memory (save DC 18) without expending a spell slot or using any material components. The memory altered must relate in some way to the target's perception of you, your appearance, your words, your actions, or your identity. You cannot use this ability to alter memories of events in which you played no part.

DM Notes

Balance considerations: The touch-proof illusion upgrades Disguise Self significantly, consider whether NPCs with passive Investigation scores above 18 should notice the magical maintenance even if they cannot pierce it. The false impression feature of Sealed Interior is the most powerful ability here; work with the player to establish what false impressions they have pre-decided so table rulings are smooth. Modify Memory is a once-per-dawn 5th-level spell with a restricted scope (must relate to the caster), this is appropriate for Very Rare but watch for creative abuse in social or political campaigns where reshaping NPC memory of 'who they met' could cascade into significant plot leverage. The reroll reaction is intentionally the weakest ability and primarily rewards aggression with enchantment and illusion spells, reinforcing playstyle identity rather than adding raw power. Suggested use: this item is best given to a player who invests deeply in social and deceptive play, its power is almost entirely outside combat and rewards preparation and roleplay.
