Grumblewick's Gleeful Cleaver
Forged by a gnomish tinkerer-spirit whose name nobody can quite pronounce correctly, Grumblewick's Gleeful Cleaver has an almost embarrassing enthusiasm for the business of war, it hums little wordless tunes when idle and rattles impatiently against its sheath. The spirit believed deeply that the best battles end with everyone on your side still standing, and so wove that philosophy directly into the steel. Scholars who have studied the axe note that the runes along its haft appear to rearrange themselves into smiley faces when no one is watching.
Mechanics
A cackling fire-touched greataxe that spouts healing embers and grows more dangerous the more wounds it has witnessed.
Hearthfire Edge
This greataxe deals an extra 1d8 fire damage on a hit. The fire conjured by this axe smells inexplicably of roasting chestnuts and singed wool, and tiny copper sparks spiral outward with each swing. This bonus damage applies on every hit with no action required.
Mending Embers
When you reduce a creature to 0 hit points with this weapon, a shower of warm golden sparks erupts from the blade and swirls toward the nearest ally you can see within 30 feet (other than yourself). That ally regains hit points equal to your Constitution modifier + your Proficiency Bonus. This effect triggers automatically, no action is required. If no ally is within 30 feet, the sparks simply fizzle out with a tiny pop.
Rage Inferno
While you are raging, the blade blazes with a cheerful roaring flame. In this state, the fire damage from Hearthfire Edge increases to 2d8, and you shed bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet. This bonus persists for the full duration of your rage with no additional action required.
Blazing Benediction
Once per day, as a bonus action, you can drive the axe head into the ground and release a burst of spiraling hearthfire in a 15-foot radius centered on you. Each ally in the area (not including yourself) regains 2d6 + 4 hit points. Each enemy in the area must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or take 2d6 fire damage. The burst is accompanied by a sound like a hundred tiny bells and the smell of warm gingerbread.
DM Notes
Balance considerations: The Mending Embers property provides consistent passive healing tied to kill confirmation, which rewards aggressive play without competing with the action economy, monitor this in fights where the barbarian can reliably finish enemies. Rage Inferno doubles the fire damage die while raging, bringing the total fire damage to 2d8 on top of normal axe damage; at level 11 this is meaningful but not overwhelming given the rage action cost. Blazing Benediction is the most impactful ability, the combination of party healing and enemy damage in a single bonus action is strong, but once-per-day keeps it from being routine. Against fire-resistant or fire-immune enemies, the axe loses most of its bonus damage; consider placing fire-vulnerable enemies nearby to let the player feel powerful, or introduce situations where the healing utility shines instead. The whimsical sensory details (bells, gingerbread, humming) are intentional and can be played up for comedic effect, lean into them at the table.
