Vethara's Unfinished Argument

Level 17·Artificer

Vethara was a siege philosopher who spent forty years arguing with her own shield, annotating its surface after every battle with corrections to her earlier predictions. She was never satisfied with her conclusions, which is why the shield was still unfinished when she disappeared into the Undermire. Those who carry it now find her notes are not the only ones: the shield adds new marginalia in the night, in a hand no one has ever identified.

Mechanics

A shield riddled with half-solved inscriptions that rewards study of enemies, gradually decoding its own power as the wielder learns the battlefield.

The Marginalia

This shield has a surface covered in layered carvings, diagrams, and annotations in at least six different hands. While holding it, you gain a +3 bonus to AC. Additionally, whenever you observe a creature for at least 1 full minute without attacking it, you record a notation about that creature type. You can hold up to 5 notations at a time; adding a sixth replaces the oldest. Against any creature matching a noted type, your AC bonus from this shield increases to +5.

The Correction

When a creature you have a notation on hits you with an attack, you may use your reaction to impose disadvantage on that attack roll retroactively after seeing the roll but before the DM declares the outcome. If the attack misses as a result, the shield emits a low harmonic tone and the attacker takes 4d10 force damage as the shield redirects the kinetic argument back at its source.

The Unsolved Page

Once per long rest, you may spend 1 minute studying a single object, creature, or location and ask the DM three yes-or-no questions about its history, origin, or hidden properties. The shield does not invent answers; it resonates with truth that is already present and knowable. The DM answers honestly to the best of what the world knows. If none of the three questions can be answered with certainty, the shield instead grants you advantage on all Intelligence-based checks made against that subject for the next 24 hours.

DM Notes

Balance note: the +5 AC against noted creature types is a significant defensive spike, but it requires the wielder to have observed the creature type for a full minute outside of combat, which costs real opportunity. The DM should track notations carefully. Five notations is a meaningful cap: a dungeon-crawling Artificer will quickly have to make decisions about which creature types to keep. The Correction is the most powerful single ability: retroactive disadvantage plus 4d10 force damage on a reaction is Legendary-tier, but it is gated on both having a notation for the attacker's type and spending the reaction before knowing the result of the disadvantage, creating genuine tension. The Unsolved Page is intentionally narrative and will vary wildly by DM: prep a few interesting truths about objects and locations in your campaign that the shield might surface. For the AC calculation, +5 replaces the +3 when a noted creature type is fighting the wielder; they do not stack.
