Ruin's Embrace
Forged in the final days of a civilization that venerated sacrifice, Ruin's Embrace was hammered from the breastplates of three generals who each died holding a breach so others could flee. The armor absorbed their final refusal to retreat, embedding that iron conviction into its metal. Scholars who have studied its etchings describe them as prayers not to any god, but to the idea of standing firm.
Mechanics
Ancient armor that channels the memory of past wounds into a protective ward, growing stronger as the wearer endures punishment.
Curse of the Unwilling Martyr
This armor was sealed with a binding rite that punishes those who flee from suffering. The curse manifests within the first hour of attunement, when the wearer first attempts to disengage from a combat encounter while below half their hit point maximum. From that moment onward, whenever the attuned wearer ends their turn more than 60 feet from a hostile creature that can see them while they are below half their hit point maximum, they must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of the nearest hostile creature until the start of their next turn, as the armor's ancient compulsion drives them back toward the fight. This curse can only be ended by a remove curse spell cast while the armor is unequipped.
Endured Memory
Each time the wearer takes damage from a single hit of 10 or more, a ward of spectral stone-light flickers across the breastplate. Until the start of the wearer's next turn, they gain +2 to their AC as the armor remembers and briefly reinforces the strike point.
Sorrow's Bulwark
Once per long rest, when the wearer is reduced to 0 hit points, they may instead drop to 1 hit point as ancient inscriptions across the armor blaze with pale gold script. Until the end of their next turn, the wearer has resistance to all damage.
DM Notes
Balance consideration: Endured Memory grants +2 AC conditionally, which at rare is within ceiling for a defensive bonus, but the trigger requires absorbing a meaningful hit first, making it reactive rather than freely available. Combined with the curse, the item creates a strong incentive loop: the wearer is punished for retreating and rewarded for absorbing punishment, which suits Fighters and Paladins well but can generate tense moments for lower-HP classes like Rangers. Sorrow's Bulwark is a powerful safety net equivalent to a modified death ward, appropriate for rare once per long rest. The curse is most interesting in retreat-heavy or tactical campaigns where staying in combat is not always the obvious choice. Consider having the curse's compulsion fail against creatures the wearer genuinely cannot reach rather than ruling it triggers regardless of obstacle.
