Brennavar's Inquiry

Level 17·Artificer

Brennavar was a gnomish artificer-historian who died mid-sentence, mid-discovery, according to those who found her notes, somewhere in the ruins of Keth Solvar. The shield she left behind was not built to be a weapon; it was built to be a ledger, a place to hold truths too important to trust only to memory. Scholars who have handled it report that reading its inner face feels less like reading and more like remembering something you were never told.

Mechanics

A shield that burns with the recorded memory of every mystery its bearer has solved, growing more powerful as understanding is forged from ignorance.

The Inquiry Record

This shield's inner face is covered in fine script that writes itself. Whenever you spend at least 10 minutes examining an object, creature, location, or phenomenon using Investigation, History, or Arcana, and you succeed on a DC 10 or higher ability check or learn a meaningful piece of lore the DM confirms as true, you may record an Inquiry. The shield can hold a maximum of 7 Inquiries at a time. Each Inquiry entry is permanently etched into the shield in Elvish script and describes the subject and the key truth discovered; entries never fade and survive the wielder's death. When you attune to this shield for the first time, you may immediately record up to 3 Inquiries from discoveries made during your adventuring history, as described to the DM.

Accumulated Understanding

For each Inquiry currently recorded on the shield, you gain a cumulative +1 bonus to AC (maximum +7, in addition to the shield's normal +2 AC bonus). The heat of the shield increases subtly with each Inquiry, at 4 or more, the shield radiates warmth sufficient to keep you and creatures within 5 feet of you comfortable in temperatures as low as −30 degrees Fahrenheit without requiring additional equipment.

Conflagration of Answers

When you make an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw against a creature or phenomenon for which you have an active Inquiry recorded on this shield, you may expend that Inquiry as a reaction. If you do, flames erupt across the shield's face in a burst of copper and white fire: you automatically succeed on the triggering roll if it is an ability check, or the attack or saving throw gains advantage if it is an attack roll or saving throw, and the triggering effect deals an additional 6d10 fire damage if it involves damage. The expended Inquiry's text chars away but remains legible as a scar on the shield's surface, no longer counting toward the Inquiries total but preserved as history.

The Final Question

Once, when you would be reduced to 0 hit points, you may choose not to fall. Instead, all 7 Inquiry slots immediately fill with a single blazing entry, 'Why?', and the shield releases stored understanding as a column of white fire. You are reduced to 1 hit point instead, and each creature of your choice within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or take 12d10 fire damage, or half on a success. All existing Inquiries are consumed and their slots reset to zero when this ability is used. This ability cannot be used again until all 7 Inquiry slots are filled once more.

DM Notes

Balance: The AC bonus scales to a maximum of +9 total AC from this shield alone (+2 base, +7 from Inquiries), which is significant. Ensure the Inquiry-recording process requires genuine engagement, the DM should confirm that discoveries are meaningful and not trivially farmed. Discourage rapid-fire Investigation checks against mundane objects; the intent is that each Inquiry represents a real mystery pursued and solved during play. The 'Conflagration of Answers' reaction is the primary combat payoff, expending an Inquiry to auto-succeed a check or gain advantage and bonus fire damage on a relevant target is powerful but self-limiting, since it permanently depletes that Inquiry slot. The 'Final Question' is a once-per-campaign near-death button gated behind a hard resource requirement (all 7 slots filled), making it a meaningful climax rather than a routine tool. The flavor of the shield suits the character's obsessive investigation personality directly, every mystery solved literally makes her harder to kill. DMs should feel free to plant mysteries specifically designed to call to the character's attention, rewarding the player's stated roleplay trait with mechanical payoffs.
