Hearthsplitter, the Laughing Flame
Forged in a volcano by a gnome artificer who could not decide whether she was building a weapon or a hearth, Hearthsplitter resolved the argument by becoming both. The axe has a personality best described as enthusiastically helpful , it hums battle hymns slightly off-key during combat, and the flame etched along its blade occasionally forms tiny winking faces between swings. Healers who encounter it often note that it smells faintly of cinnamon.
Mechanics
A roaring greataxe that deals bonus fire damage, mends wounds on killing blows, and erupts in a burst of healing embers once per day.
Crackling Edge
This weapon is a +2 greataxe. When you hit a creature with this weapon, the attack deals an extra 1d6 fire damage as cheerful orange sparks spiral out from the blade with a sound like a tiny giggle.
Ember Mending
Whenever you reduce a creature to 0 hit points with this weapon, a burst of warm embers washes over you and one creature of your choice that you can see within 10 feet of you. You and the chosen creature each regain hit points equal to 1d8 + your Constitution modifier. A creature cannot benefit from Ember Mending more than once per round.
Hearthbloom Eruption
Once per day, as a bonus action, you slam Hearthsplitter into the ground and a ring of joyful fire erupts outward. Each creature of your choice within 20 feet of you must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 3d8 fire damage. Each creature of your choice within 20 feet that is not targeted by the damage instead regains 3d8 hit points as comforting warmth rolls over them. You may choose independently for each creature in range whether they are targeted for damage or healing , but you cannot apply both effects to the same creature.
Fireproof Frame
While attuned to this weapon, you have resistance to fire damage. Whenever you take fire damage, the blade brightens and hums approvingly for a moment , as if delighted.
DM Notes
Balance consideration: The dual-purpose Hearthbloom Eruption (damage AND healing in the same action, once per day) is the item's most powerful moment. At levels 10-12, 3d8 average ~13.5 healing or damage in a 20-foot radius is impactful but not overwhelming , comparable to a 3rd-level spell. Watch for Barbarian reckless attack + extra attack chains amplifying Ember Mending across multi-kill rounds; in swarms or against minion-heavy encounters this can generate substantial free healing every turn. Consider that the gnome Barbarian's smaller size and front-line role means the 20-foot Hearthbloom radius will frequently catch allies , encourage the player to plan positioning. The +2 bonus is standard for Very Rare and intentionally paired with two meaningful secondary effects rather than standing alone. Fire resistance pairs naturally with a fire-flavored character without being overpowered at this tier.
