Conflagrant Verdict
Conflagrant Verdict was forged in the caldera of a long-dead volcano by a smith who believed justice should arrive like a landslide, undeniable, consuming, and final. The blade has passed through the hands of seven champions, each of whom reportedly swung it not with precision but with absolute conviction. When the last of them fell to a troll warchief, the sword sank into the creature's chest and detonated, leaving nothing but a blackened crater and the lingering smell of brimstone.
Mechanics
A roaring greatsword that ignites with volcanic fury when its wielder charges into battle, dealing bonus fire damage and detonating into a burst of flame when a massive blow lands.
Smoldering Edge
This greatsword deals an extra 1d6 fire damage on a hit. The blade glows a deep molten red at all times, shedding dim light in a 10-foot radius.
Raging Blaze
While you are raging, the extra fire damage from Smoldering Edge increases to 1d10, and the blade sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet.
Eruption
Once per day, when you score a critical hit with this weapon, you can choose to trigger an eruption. Each creature within 10 feet of the target (other than you) must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 3d8 fire damage. On a successful save, it takes half as much. The eruption occurs after the critical hit's damage is applied.
DM Notes
The attunement restriction is mechanically warranted because Raging Blaze explicitly triggers on the class-wide Barbarian feature Rage. The item remains usable by any Barbarian subclass, and Smoldering Edge functions even without raging, making it viable in exploration and non-rage encounters. The Eruption once-per-day effect is the big payoff moment, at 3d8 fire damage in a 10-foot radius it averages 13.5 fire damage to each creature caught, which is strong but limited to crits and once daily. If the party faces many small creatures, the eruption can feel spectacular; against single-target bosses it may rarely trigger. Consider giving the Barbarian opportunities to fight in tight corridors or against clustered enemies to let Eruption shine. Be aware that fire resistance is common among certain enemy types, have a few non-fire-immune encounters ready to let the sword feel impactful.
