Draught of the Glacial Wound

Level 4·Barbarian

These potions are found only in the ruins of a civilization that vanished beneath a glacier ages ago — a people who believed suffering and cold were sacred, and who preserved their greatest wounds as offerings to something vast and sleeping beneath the ice. The liquid inside is the color of a frozen lake at dusk: deep blue shading to black, with a single shard of ancient ice suspended at its heart that never melts. Those who have drunk it report hearing a slow, rhythmic sound afterward — like something enormous breathing in the dark far below.

Mechanics

Drinking this potion sheathes the imbiber in a shell of ancient ice that grants temporary hit points, punishes attackers with freezing cold, and can erupt in a burst of glacial force.

Consume

As an action, you drink this potion. You immediately gain 30 temporary hit points. While you have these temporary hit points, your skin is visibly encrusted with pale blue-white frost and your breath fogs the air regardless of temperature. These temporary hit points last for 1 hour or until depleted.

Frost Retaliation

While you have the temporary hit points granted by this potion, whenever a creature hits you with a melee attack, it takes 1d8 cold damage as ice shards crack outward from the impact. This effect triggers automatically — no action or reaction required.

Glacial Eruption

Once before the potion's temporary hit points are fully depleted, you may use a bonus action to release the stored cold in a violent burst. All creatures within 10 feet of you must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 3d8 cold damage and its speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, a creature takes half damage and suffers no speed reduction. After you use this ability, the Frost Retaliation effect ends and any remaining temporary hit points from this potion are lost.

DM Notes

At character level 4, 30 temporary hit points is meaningful but not overwhelming — roughly equivalent to the character's full HP pool for a Barbarian, which is appropriate for a rare one-use consumable. The Frost Retaliation passive is strong in a fight with multiple attackers but requires the character to take hits to trigger, which creates satisfying risk-reward tension. Glacial Eruption's DC 14 CON save is intentionally moderate; at this tier most monsters will succeed roughly half the time. The potion's power is front-loaded and single-use, so there is no stacking concern. Consider placing this in a dungeon context with multiple melee combatants to let all three effects shine. The speed reduction on Glacial Eruption pairs especially well with a Barbarian's tendency to be in melee range of multiple enemies simultaneously. Because the eruption ends the retaliation effect, the player must make a meaningful tactical decision about when to trigger it.
