Emberlatch Warden

Level 8·Artificer

Built over three sleepless weeks by an artificer who couldn't tolerate the imprecision of conventional fireproofing, the Emberlatch Warden converts wasted heat into purposeful force — because in her view, wasted energy is a design flaw, not a feature. The alchemical coils etched along its interior glow faintly amber even when cold, humming with the memory of every flame it has ever swallowed. It is, as its maker insists, not finished — but it is very, very good.

Mechanics

A heat-storing shield that absorbs fire damage and releases it as blasts or protective bursts.

Heat Reservoir — 5 charges, recharges 1d4+1 at dawn

The Emberlatch Warden stores thermal energy in a lattice of alchemical coils visible along its inner face. The shield has 5 charges. Charges are also gained through Thermal Intake (see below). The maximum charge capacity is 5 at all times.

Thermal Intake

Whenever you would take fire damage while holding this shield, you may use your reaction to reduce that damage by 1d10 + 3. For every 5 points of damage reduced this way (rounded down), the shield gains 1 charge, up to its maximum of 5. This reaction can be used once per turn.

Forgeblast

As a bonus action, you expend 1 charge to fire a bolt of compressed heat at a target you can see within 60 feet. The target must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking 2d6 fire damage on a failed save or half on a success.

Incandescent Seal

As an action, you expend 3 charges to release a controlled wave of heat in a 10-foot radius centered on yourself. Each creature of your choice in that area must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take 3d6 fire damage and be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn. Creatures that succeed take half damage and suffer no additional effect. You and creatures you designate are unaffected.

Enduring Craft

This shield is immune to fire damage. While you are attuned to it, you have advantage on saving throws against spells or effects that deal fire damage.

Recharges 1d4+1 at dawn

DM Notes

Balance consideration: Thermal Intake can generate charges mid-combat when facing fire-using enemies, potentially refilling the charge pool faster than the dawn recharge alone. In encounters with heavy fire damage (dragons, fire elementals, enemy Fireball spells), the shield can sustain near-continuous Forgeblast use. DMs should note this is intentional — the character is rewarded for smart positioning against thematic enemies — but if the campaign features persistent fire damage sources, monitor whether Incandescent Seal is being fired multiple times per encounter. If it becomes disruptive, consider ruling that Thermal Intake charges gained beyond the starting pool are spent first and do not carry over between encounters. Enduring Craft's advantage on fire saves stacks well with a Gnome's racial Magic Resistance if applicable; no adjustment needed but worth flagging. The item rewards an inquisitive, hands-on player who reads the battlefield — fitting the character's perfectionist tinkerer personality without requiring subclass-specific triggers.
