The Unmoored Tide
Cut from a shard of ice hauled from the deepest trench of the Cerulean Meridian by a sailor who swore it never melted, the button passed through a dozen pockets before finding the one it was meant for. Those who study such things say it was shaped by a water-spirit who understood that freedom is not the absence of bonds, it is the absence of being found. It asks nothing of the one who carries it, only that they keep moving.
Mechanics
A frost-cold button worn close to the heart that masks elemental nature and lets cold ocean air follow the wearer wherever they roam.
Salt and Silence
The button radiates a faint, pleasant chill. Any spell or ability that would detect your elemental origin, creature type, or unusual heritage, such as detect evil and good, or a similar divination, perceives you as an ordinary humanoid with no supernatural nature. This concealment does not affect spells or abilities targeting alignment or specific named creatures.
Harbour-Wind
The scent of cold open ocean follows you. You have advantage on Charisma (Performance) and Charisma (Persuasion) checks made against sailors, dockworkers, pirates, fisherfolk, and other seafarers, as the smell of deep water and honest wind marks you as one of their own without a word spoken.
Current's Memory
Whenever you are aboard a vessel on open water and would be required to make a Constitution saving throw to avoid exhaustion from cold weather or cold water, you automatically succeed. The cold is simply home.
DM Notes
Balance note: the heritage-masking property (Salt and Silence) is the most impactful effect at this rarity but is appropriately narrow, it only blocks divination of creature type and elemental origin, not alignment or intent, so detect thoughts and similar spells are unaffected. It creates meaningful roleplay value for a character actively hiding their nature without making them immune to all magical scrutiny. Harbour-Wind is a conditional advantage on two skills in a specific social context, which is well within uncommon range. Current's Memory is situational survival flavor that rewards the maritime theme. None of these effects require attunement because each is narrow or contextual enough that permanently wearing the button without formal attunement is entirely balanced. As a DM, consider introducing NPCs, a Zhentarim scryer, a harbor-master with a gifted amulet, who use methods specific enough to pierce Salt and Silence, preserving dramatic tension around the character's hidden nature.
