Quill of the Unquiet Archive
In the smoldering ruins of the Ashenveil Athenaeum — a grand library destroyed in a single night of mysterious fire — the scholars never truly left. Their obsessive annotations, their desperate marginalia, their final unfinished sentences, all coalesced into this crossbow over decades of haunting. It fires bolts of radiant scripture: passages from books that no longer exist, still blazing with the conviction of their authors. To attune to it is to hear the quiet, rustling chorus of ten thousand unfinished thoughts.
Mechanics
A ghostly crossbow that fires bolts of radiant scripture, binding enemies in spectral text and illuminating secrets hidden in darkness.
Radiant Scripture
This weapon's bolts are formed from condensed sheets of glowing, ghostly text rather than physical quarrels — no ammunition is required. Attacks with this weapon deal 1d8 radiant damage instead of piercing damage. When you score a critical hit, the target is outlined in pale golden light until the end of your next turn: attacks against it have advantage, and it cannot benefit from invisibility or magical darkness.
Marginalia — 4 Charges, recharge 1d4 charges at dawn
The crossbow holds 4 charges drawn from the restless annotations of its spectral authors. Expend charges to use the following abilities.
Binding Verse
When you hit a creature with this weapon, you may expend 1 charge as a free addition to the attack. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be restrained by swirling ribbons of luminous script until the end of its next turn. While restrained this way, the creature sheds dim light in a 5-foot radius.
Illuminated Page
As a bonus action, expend 2 charges to launch a flare of radiant text at a point you can see within 60 feet. Each creature within 10 feet of that point must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of your next turn. The area is filled with bright light for 1 minute (shedding dim light for an additional 10 feet), which cannot be dispelled by magical darkness.
Ghost Librarian's Eye
As an action, expend 1 charge to commune with the archive's haunting presence. You learn whether any written text within 30 feet has been magically hidden, altered, or cursed, and you can read any language for the next 10 minutes as the spectral scribes translate for you.

DM Notes
This item is solidly balanced for a level 5 character. The base 1d8 radiant damage trades the standard piercing type for one that bypasses fewer resistances but is more broadly effective against undead and fiends — a lateral move, not an upgrade. Binding Verse is the primary combat expenditure and at 1 charge per use can trigger 4 times before the pool runs dry; DC 15 restraint is meaningful at tier 2 but not overwhelming since it lasts only until end of the target's next turn. Illuminated Page is the premium ability at 2 charges — area blindness plus anti-darkness light covers two niche problems cleanly. Ghost Librarian's Eye is intentionally non-combat and rewards creative play in exploration. The 1d4 recharge means the pool is variable; some dawns the wielder recovers only 1 charge, preventing reliable full recharge spam. For a Bard specifically, Binding Verse stacks beautifully with the Bard's own debuffs and ally advantage generation without referencing any Bard-specific mechanic, keeping it accessible to the whole party as loot. The critical hit outlining effect requires no resource and gives the table a clean visual signal — consider narrating the golden script wrapping around the target as a memorable recurring image.
