Emberkin's Laughing Axe

Level 11·Barbarian

Forged by the gnome ancestral smith Peprikka Tumblesoot in a volcano she allegedly 'befriended,' this greataxe carries the warmth of every ancestor who ever laughed too loudly at a funeral pyre. The spirits within are cheeky - they hum jaunty tunes mid-battle, occasionally wink at enemies, and take particular delight in patching up allies as their foes fall. Peprikka always insisted that healing and fire were the same thing: both make you feel better, and both come with an embarrassing amount of heat.

Mechanics

A fire-wreathed greataxe that heals nearby allies on a kill and erupts in ancestral flame when its wielder rages.

Ancestral Hearthfire

This greataxe is wreathed in warm, crackling orange and gold flames that shed bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet. The flames deal no damage to the wielder or their allies. On a hit, this weapon deals an extra 1d8 fire damage.

Spark of the Ancestors

When the wielder reduces a creature to 0 hit points with this weapon, ancestral spirits erupt from the axe in a burst of laughing embers. Each creature of the wielder's choice within 15 feet of the slain creature (other than the wielder) regains hit points equal to 1d8 + the wielder's Constitution modifier. This property can trigger only once per turn.

Furious Hearthbloom

While the wielder is raging, the ancestral flames intensify. At the start of each of the wielder's turns while raging, each ally within 10 feet of the wielder (not the wielder themselves) gains temporary hit points equal to the wielder's proficiency bonus. These temporary hit points last until the rage ends or until the start of the wielder's next turn, whichever comes first. A creature cannot gain temporary hit points from this effect if it already has temporary hit points from it.

Giggling Ghost Blade

Once per day, as a bonus action, the wielder can release a gust of whirling ember-spirits in a 15-foot cone originating from the axe. Each creature in the cone must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 4d6 fire damage and be unable to take reactions until the start of their next turn. On a successful save, a creature takes half the fire damage and suffers no other effect. Tiny spectral gnome-shaped faces grin and wink throughout the embers.

DM Notes

The extra 1d8 fire damage on every hit is the primary sustained damage boost and sits comfortably at Very Rare for a martial weapon. Spark of the Ancestors provides meaningful party healing tied to a kill condition, which is exciting but requires the barbarian to land the killing blow - at levels 10-12, this will happen regularly in multi-enemy encounters but not on every fight. Furious Hearthbloom is the most impactful passive: at level 11 the proficiency bonus is +4, meaning up to several allies each gain 4 temporary HP per turn while raging - strong but not overwhelming since temp HP don't stack with themselves and the barbarian must stay near allies. Giggling Ghost Blade gives battlefield control plus fire damage once per day - the reaction denial is the more valuable part and rewards tactical positioning. Balance note: the healing outputs (Spark and Hearthbloom) are deliberately generous to reward the gnome's healer fantasy without overshadowing a dedicated healer; however, in small-party or low-enemy-count encounters the kill-trigger heal may rarely fire. Consider reminding the player the 15-foot cone ability exists if they forget it in tense fights.
