Emberveil Sunderer

Level 5·Barbarian

Forged in the caldera of a mountain that swallowed a village whole, Emberveil Sunderer was hammered from iron pulled directly from the magma by a smith who never left the mountain again. Warriors who carry it claim they can hear the volcano's roar in their own chest when the axe bites deep. It does not merely cut, it opens the way for something far older and angrier than any blade.

Mechanics

A roaring greataxe wreathed in living flame that erupts into a catastrophic firestorm when it fells an enemy.

Hungry Flame

This greataxe is wreathed in roaring fire. It deals an extra 1d6 fire damage on a hit. This damage cannot be suppressed, the weapon is always alight.

Sundering Blow

When you roll the maximum result on any of this weapon's damage dice (including the bonus fire die from Hungry Flame), the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. This can trigger once per attack.

Conflagrant Ruin

When you reduce a creature to 0 hit points with this weapon, fire erupts from the strike in a 10-foot radius centered on that creature. Each other creature in the area must succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d8 fire damage, taking half on a success. This effect occurs once per kill, it does not chain through creatures slain by the eruption itself.

DM Notes

This is a strong but focused rare weapon. The 1d6 fire damage is always on, so the DPS floor is genuinely high, pair this with a Barbarian's already substantial damage and consider whether encounters have enough hit-point padding to survive burst turns. Conflagrant Ruin rewards aggressive, high-damage play and incentivizes targeting clustered enemies for maximum splash value; place encounters with spread enemies to moderate this. Sundering Blow is lovely against big, immovable bosses but trivializes mobs, it fires most often with a d12 (rolling 12) and the fire die (rolling 6), so roughly 11% chance per die per attack, meaning it procs reliably over a long fight without feeling broken. The DC 14 saves are appropriate for tier 2 play. There is no flat +X bonus, so the item does not overshadow a mundane weapon economically, it rewards the player for playing aggressively, which fits the barbarian fantasy without making cautious classes feel left out.
